The Museum für Angewandte Kunst (formerly the Museum für Kunsthandwerk) is an example of a museum type which emerged in the mid nineteenth century under the pressure of industrialization. An exhibition of outstanding testimonies to the arts and crafts of the European and world past - all from private collections - led in 1877 to the founding of the Mitteldeutscher Kunstgewerbeverein (Central German Handicrafts Association) as the supporting organization for a museum as well as a vocational school.
