2008 marks the 100th anniversary of the death of Heinrich Siebold, to whom the MAK owes a large part of its Japanese collection.
A fairly unknown part of this collection are the katagami, dyeing stencils which reflect the fantastic wealth of Japanese fabric decoration. In line with a western reorientation of fashions, textile production also changed in Japan before 1900. Europeans eagerly collected the “sample patterns”, and their influence on textile art and decoration in Europe is unmistakable.
