Nagatoshi Onishi is an internationally famous artist and an institution in Japanese laquerware both as a craftsman and as professor in the subject laquerware at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. This is his first Scandinavian exhibition. His style is characterized by simple organic shapes; vessels, bowls and objects that are very sculptural in their expression because they are not decorated, but stand as monochrome unified wholes in red or black, and sometimes gold. In connection with the exhibition rare examples of Japanese laquerware from the Museum’s own collection will be on display.

The exhibition marks the first North American presentation of residential projects by Taylor and Nishizawa and reveals their ideas addressing the challenges of building homes in existing city environments. Due to their scale, extensive built environment, and existing efforts to grow the city from within, London and Tokyo face similar urban development issues but occupy cultural contexts in which themes of proximity, privacy, community, and public space take on different meanings and require distinct solutions.

The exhibition “Formless Furniture” shows that the rule “form follows material” was also applied – and still is – in the design of everyday objects: to this day, designers playfully oppose the so-called good form and the marketing of conformity in living environments.

Richly illustrated with 200 historical photographs from the MAK collection and relying on detailed descriptions, the show documents the biography and production of the architect and designer, introducing him to the public in the Czech Republic. The panels unfold a comprehensive survey of Josef Hoffmann’s genesis as an artist and his various activities. The exhibition has been prepared by the MAK – Austrian Museum of Applied Arts/Contemporary Art in cooperation with the Moravian Gallery in Brno and the Austrian Cultural Forum in Prague.

The documentation, that serves to both register and prove that the different variations of the box introduce ways of transforming the space according to the project, form part of the show giving equal importance to all phases of the process: sketches, drawings and maquettes, images of analogous things, and plan or structure analyses are presented in a way similar to the maquettes and presentation images.

Recognized as one of America’s most innovative modern artists, Alexander Calder (1898–1976) redefined sculpture through his iconic mobiles, stabiles, and the popular Cirque Calder. Calder’s work in metal jewelry, however, is one form of his artistic output that is less known. Throughout his life, the artist produced more than 1,800 jewelry works of art, each made entirely by hand. This is the first exhibition devoted exclusively to his unique body of jewelry work, and consists of approximately one hundred objects, including necklaces, bracelets, brooches, earrings, and tiaras.

My Public Space' is a travelling exhibition that makes it clear that public space in Europe is much less public and accessible than we tend to think. How our immediate surroundings are organised is increasingly subject to privatisation, thematisation, control, commercialisation and the influence of the media. Eight correspondents carried out research on urban developments in Dublin, Copenhagen, Naples, Barcelona, Rotterdam, Tirana, Brussels and Berlin to find out how the transformation of public space has taken place.

Created by the government, for the government, Washington was bound to differ from other American cities. Here, the local needs that all cities share—for housing, transportation, water and power utilities, commercial centers, and community institutions—vie directly with national priorities. More than half a million residents now live in the District, in more than 100 neighborhoods. This exhibition explores how residents experience the city and how Washington itself expresses the tension between the demands of a working seat of government and the desire for a national symbol, and the hopes and needs of an evolving city.
