The poster exhibition examines the myth of Switzerland and brings together distinctive examples of advertising from 1900 until today into a visual dialogue. This shows how the pictorial worlds appear in advertising as facets of Swissness and shape the image of Switzerland, but also how they can be impaired but nevertheless continue to be of service.

The works included in the exhibition range from individual photographs and photographic series, to sculptures and paintings that incorporate photographic elements, and to videos, both on monitors and projected, as well as film, performance, and site-specific installations.

For his third solo exhibition at the gallery which has been representing him for ten years now, George Condo has created a brand-new group of paintings inspired by cartoon characters from the 1950s and 1960s. This new series marks a turning point in George Condo’s work although it still carries on seamlessly his research into painting, which lies somewhere between realism and abstraction.

Davide Balula’s Compass In the Eye seems to evoke both a pupil’s mischief gone wrong as well as the artist’s ability to work without the measuring tool. Instead of geometric shapes and accurate proportions though, Balula compasses here literally the material traces of a Heraclitean reality: halfway between proto-physics and abstract expressionism, the artist establishes an assisted topography of chance where, based on pre-determined conventions and protocols, the artistic intention combines itself with the contingency of the world.

The history of tea is directly linked to the history of the tea-cup becoming an aesthetic object. Ceramics from the twelfth to the twenty-first century – tea-cups from the MAK Collection from China, Korea, Japan as well as loans from private collections – demonstrate that diversity was discovered in the reduction of form to its essentials. This idea is taken up in the installation “ Door of Eternity” by Heinz Frank, which can be seen in the center of the room.

One focus of the exhibition is the influence of (post) modern dance and choreography in contemporary art. Another central theme is the re-presentation of the performative, and the notation of movement and dancerly activities through the most varied media, ranging from classical photography and the filmic through to the sculptural and installative.

While light here refers to nothing beyond itself, it causes surface, colour and space to interact and allows viewers to immerse themselves in a mysterious, painterly world.

The particularity of Christian's paintings originates from his intricate motifs and technique. The mist and moss, often blending into the landscape, are often dabbed on with a hard brush. Most remarkably, the colour graduation of rocks, stretches of water and cascades are prepared on his palette and completed in one unique brush stroke. Whereas the concentric tracks left behind by the hairs in the oil paint undoubtedly recalls the raking of Zen gardens, the technique resembles equally some of Bernard Frize's paintings and the Chinese precept of the unique brushstroke precluding any corrections.

This large-scale exhibition surveys nearly three decades of work by William Kentridge (b. 1955, South Africa), a remarkably versatile artist whose work combines the political with the poetic. Dealing with subjects as sobering as apartheid, colonialism, and totalitarianism, his work is often imbued with dreamy, lyrical undertones or comedic bits of self-deprecation that render his powerful messages both alluring and ambivalent.

This installation presents selections from MoMA's design collection that illuminate the primary values of Good Design as promoted (and disputed) by museums, design councils, and department stores.
