17 Carolyn Carlson (1943, California) is an American contemporary dance chore- ographer, performer, and poet. A tireless traveller, always seeking to develop and share her poetic universe, Carlson has significant influence and success in many European countries; and played a key role in the birth of French and Italian contemporary dance at Paris Opera Ballet and Teatrodanza at La Fenice . For her, dance is strongly oriented towards philosophy and spirituality. She creates works that express her poetic thoughts and a form of complete art within which movement occupies a special place. Carolyn Carlson studied dance at the San Francisco School of Ballet and at Utah University . Soon after, she joined the Alwin Nikolaïs dance company (New York), and became an outstanding dancer of the company. In the beginning of 1970’s she moved to France, as a part of Anne Béranger’s dance company; and presented Rituel pour un rêve mort at the Avignon Festival. She was requested to join the London School of Contemporary Dance as an instructor, performer and choreographer. In the mid 1970’s, Carlson was a choreographer at the Opéra de Par is. At that time, she directed the Groupe de Recherches Théâtrales (GRTOP) and created some of her most significant pie- ces, such as “Density 21,5”, ”The Architects”, “This, that and the other”, “Slow, heavy and blue”. Carlson held masterclasses in improvisation and composition techniques at the rotonde of the Opéra. During her career, she won numerous prestigious prizes, included Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres of the French Republic , International Dance Festival in Paris as Best Dancer, Prix Benois de la Danse, among others.
