31 Ettore Sottsass (14 September 1917 – 31 December 2007) was an architect- designer, founder of the Memphis Group (1981), important landmark in contem- porary design. In the 50s, Sottsass was hired as a design consultant for Olivett i and won the Compasso d’Oro in 1959 with the model Elea 9003. Sottsass with Perry A. King, created the Valentine in 1969 which is considered today as a milestone in 20th century Design. His work from the late 1960s to the 1970s was focused on collaborations with younger designers such as Superstudio and Archizoom Associati, and associated with the Radical movement , ending with the foundation of Memphis at the begin- ning of the 80s. Whilst the Memphis movement in the eighties attracted enormous atten- tion around the world for its energy and flamboyance, Ettore Sottsass was simultaneously assembling a major design consultancy which he named Sottsass Associati.
