Her work usually features LGBT-related themes, images or public figures. In the beginning of 1970’s Nan Goldin published her first works - black-and-white images of transvestites and transsexuals, influenced by cinéma verité and the photographer Larry Clark. In the mid 1970’s she studied art at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Her personal choice of life was surrounded by drug use and sexual experiences, which Goldin transformed into her works. One of her projects in Brazil was censored, due to its sexually explicit nature. In the 1990’s she created a series of images called “The Family of Nan, 1990–92”, in which she documen- ted her friends’ AIDS-related deaths. In 1995 she published those images in the book “Tokyo Love: Spring Fever 1994”. Goldin also made a biographical film, called “ I’ll Be Your Mirror” for the BBC. By the end of the 20th century she had her retrospective exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. In 2001, Nan Goldin was presented at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. The Hasselblad Foundation honored her with the Hasselblad Award as “a photographer recognized for major achievements.” Nan Goldin has been the recipient of numerous other awards
