Kengo Kuma & Associates unveiled its design ideas for the Gare Saint-Denis Pleyel, Paris. By linking the two sides of the city through a huge railway network, the station aims to become one of the three main stations of the city's new rapid transit line, together with the stations of Clichy-Montfermeil and Le Bourget.

The Japanese firm, which won the design competition this Fall, projected a futuristic inspired structure spanning over 45,000 square-metres, with 5 levels above the ground and four below. The new station will include shops, a multimedia library and a business centre, and is conceived as an extension of public spaces at each level, in order to integrate functionality and efficiency in a social environment.

Born in 1954 in Japan, Kengo Kuma is one of the most significant contemporary Japanese architects. He has won the Finnish Spirit of Nature Wood Architecture Award in 2002, and his studio is currently working on several major architecture projects in Japan and abroad, such as the Victoria & Albert Museum in Dundee, Scotland.

Gare Saint-Denis Pleyel will be on service in 2023 and the construction works are set to begin in 2017.
