El Greco’s ‘The Disrobing of Christ’ is currently on view in the Pinakothek der Moderne – the first time a work from the Alte Pinakothek has been presented in the modern-art museum.

The display captures the phenomenal impact that El Greco’s work had around 100 years ago, when a young generation of Expressionist painters celebrated El Greco as the prophet of modern art. From this perspective, Munich played a key role in the critical reassessment of El Greco. The Disrobing was acquired for the Alte Pinakothek in 1909. In 1911 it went on show there with other paintings by El Greco in the legendary exhibition of the Nemes Collection. El Greco’s Disrobing of Christ is joined by
seven great works by the artists Heinrich Maria Davringhausen, Robert Delaunay, Adriaan Korteweg, Franz Marc, and Max Oppenheimer.
