The artist Christodoulos Panayiotou (b. 1978) has a background in choreography and anthropology, and weaves together the methods of the researcher and the choreographer in his multiform work.

He has systematically examined how cultural and national identities are constructed through collective storytelling. One of Panayiotou’s series grows out of investigations into Cypriot state archives, reflecting on the role of photography and media in the creation of identity. His analyses of photographs found in these archives shed new light on the dominant identity shifts during the charged period that followed the independence of the island in 1960. The exhibition title, Days and Ages, is a paraphrase of Einar Gjerstad’s memoires from the Swedish archaeological expedition that carried out expansive excavations in Cyprus in the 1920s and 1930s.

Curator: Matilda Olof-Ors
