Designmuseum Danmark exhibits seventeen printed British textiles from the years between 1952 and 1972, all from a group commonly known as ‘Post-War British Textiles’

The textiles were designed in the post-war years, when England became one of the leading European countries in the field of textile design with prominent designers and artists whose works were a powerful source of inspiration for Danish textile designers, among others. The exhibition features textiles by leading designers including Lucienne Day, Marian Mahler, Jacqueline Groag, Barbara Brown, Robert Stewart, Shirley Craven and Victor Vasarely.

One of the best-known textiles from the 1950s is Lucienne Day’s (1917-2010) print ‘Calyx’, which received numerous awards. It outsold all other textile designs in the 1950s and became a source of inspiration to other designers. The style was inspired by abstract art, in particular by artists such as Paul Klee (1879-1940), Joan Miró (1893-1983) and Alexander Calder (1898-1976).

Fifteen of the seventeen textiles on display made up a collection that was donated to Designmuseum Danmark in autumn 2011. The collection was donated by Francesca Galloway.
