Koen Theys- S.M.A.K. presents the first major retrospective by the Belgian video artist Koen Theys (1963, Brussels).
Theys was one of the founding fathers of the Belgian video art scene in the early eighties and was in at the birth of discourse on video art in Belgium and by extension throughout Europe.
In his work, Theys combines thorough, substantive and formal research into video art as a medium with very expressive imagery that refers to a baroque aesthetic, often combined with references to European and Belgian cultural and political history. MOMA (New York) and Centre Pompidou (Paris) collected Theys’ work at an early stage. The exhibition at the S.M.A.K. will mainly focus on his monumental video work, outlining Theys' artistic career from the early 80s to the present.
