Starting from a basis in German informal painting, he introduced opulence and sensuality as a counterpart to cool American Minimalism.

This exhibition includes assemblages, collages and paintings. In 1984 there was a major exhibition of Buthe’s work at the MHK, the forerunner of the S.M.A.K. For that show he created the installation ‘Taufkapelle mit Papa und Mama’, one of the highlights of the S.M.A.K. collection and also of this exhibition. In cooperation with Kunstmuseum Luzern and Haus der Kunst, Munich.
