THE IMPORTANCE AND ORIGIN OF THE PAINTER’S WORKS IN THE STAATLICHE GRAPHISCHE SAMMLUNG MUNICH

In Austria, Rudolf von Alt (1812–1905) is one of the best-known 19th century artists. In his early days as a pupil of his father Jakob, Von Alt developed a specialisation in landscapes and cityscapes – ‘vedute’ – a genre to which he would remain indebted over the course of his nearly eighty-year career.
Outside of Austria, the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung Munich holds the most important collection of Von Alt’s work

Further important works come from private Viennese collections, among them the collections of Jewish families. A project sponsored by the Arbeitsstelle für Provenienzforschung in Berlin investigated the provenance of 617 drawings and watercolours by Jakob and Rudolf von Alt that had been seized by the Nazis and were later transferred to the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung in 1959.
Some works were identified as ‘looted art’ and were returned to their owners. The exhibition will also present questions and findings from the project’s research.
