Works from the Pompidou, Tate and MMK collections

Within the framework of a unique cooperation project, the transnational show will bring together more than sixty masterpieces from three of Europe's most important art collections: the Centre Pompidou, the Tate and the MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt am Main.

Organized jointly with the Tate Liverpool and the Centre Pompidou-Metz, the "Imaginary Museum" will be the exhibition highlight of the year 2016. It will be on view at the MMK 2 – the MMK Frankfurt's new branch – from 26 March to 11 September 2016. The show's point of departure will be a fictional disaster scenario: art is doomed to extinction, and only a few specimens can be saved: the most important artworks are preserved for the future in a time capsule. Yet the concept also goes a step further: after the manner of Ray Bradbury's science-fiction novel Fahrenheit 451, there are different ways of rescuing artworks from destruction. Various means of remembrance, conveyance and transformation will be tested in the show.
