This exhibition begins with Hao Jingban’s “Beijing Ballroom” cycle, which she spent three years researching and producing. In separate but related films, the artist turns her lens onto ballrooms and the now elderly dancers who once populated them.

She examines the fate of this generation against the national history underpinning the evolution of ballroom dancing in China, which arrived during the Republican Era, enjoyed a brief vogue among the Beijing elite at the dawn of the People’s Republic, fell from favor during the decades that followed, and was finally resurrected in public parks and plazas after the Reform and Opening. Through this historical arc, Hao explores interplays of determinism and contingency in the relationship between man and society, as well as the interaction between cultural vogues and ideological transformations. The artist’s first solo exhibition, it will also include another new work currently being produced.
