Combining drawing, photography, sculpture, and projections, the complex installations of Swiss artist Zilla Leutenegger (b. 1968) successfully expand the two-dimensional picture plane into three-dimensional space and set it in motion. Developed between 2004 and 2007, the series Apartment comprises seven projections, each dedicated to a specific area of a dwelling; a kitchen, a bathroom, a library, a hallway, etc.

Inhabited by the alter-ego of the artist – who we observe performing quotidian, repetitive acts – subtle, atmospherically charged narratives about existence begin to emerge. The group of works, whose acquisition by the Free State of Bavaria was made possible through a generous donation by the
Goetz Collection, is now on display for the first time at the Pinakothek der Moderne. Specifically for this exhibition, the artist is also showing new sculptures and prints, further developing the idea of a living artwork that unfolds in time. The exhibition is accompanied by a handsome artist’s book, as
well as a workshop led by the artist for young adults (ages 17–22).
