«I’ve never been interested in photography, but rather images.
I believe my work begins where photography ends»
Olivo Barbieri

The exhibition takes form around this apparently paradoxical statement, designed as an itinerary for a critical, new and annotated interpretation of the work of one of the most important figures in contemporary Italian photography.

A major retrospective that frames, through six sections, the diverse themes or areas of research around which Olivo Barbieri has developed his artistic work.

Photographs and films illustrate the photographer’s career from the late 1970s to the present: from the first Flippers found in an abandoned factory that play on the decadent icons of the modern, by way of the alienating nocturnal images of urban setting which contrast with the visions of faces and landscapes in the paintings conserved in museums; from the exploration of Italian cities and suburbs of the 1980s, to the repeated trips to China and the Far East, through to the aerial views of the 1990, an early approach to that work on urban and natural setting that was to take systematic form in the series site specific initiated in 2003 and still a work in progress.
