As part of the Collateral Events of the 58th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, the Fondation Louis Vuitton has invited French artist Philippe Parreno to create a whole new installation for the Espace. Three interdependent elements (a grand luminous marquee, a mechanical mirrored shutter and a phosphorescent wallpaper patterned with black irises) react thanks to a computer programme to the pace of the ongoing development of microorganisms collected during past exhibitions and harvested in a bioreactor specifically developed for the artist by the CNRS (French National Centre for Scientific Research) and the Physics Department of Ecole Nationale Supérieure (Paris, France). With its disruptive temporality, this exhibition annihilates the familiar markers of perception in favour of a stimulating process of inventing new ways of understanding, defying rational categories and the established order.
