"Distorted" by Susy Lelièvre. Broken mirrors and strange games ... offer a vision of deformed smashed archetypes.
Suzy Lelièvre likes to tell stories where standardised objects wander off the beaten track, escape the industrial production chain and cast off their physical and utilitarian shackles.
To her, furniture archetypes are a language, and she eagerly deconstructs its syntax, causes shifts in meaning and plays on words. Games are another normative space she is seeking to break down as she seizes upon ancient forms of popular games to better break their rules.
And although tables and mirrors are objects that remain usable, the artist’s dominoes, dice and pick-up sticks radically bring up the rejection of pre-assigned functionality. The little black dots that adorn the white faces of dice and dominoes are as if irresistibly drawn by a magnetic force powerful enough to disrupt their orderly count.
