Who is Ted? Ted Carberry was my grandfather. Born in 1913 in Ireland, Ted was a traditional saddler. He met and married Margaret Moran and had a family of 11 children. In 1942, and at the age of 29, Ted established the Carberry Leather family business in Mountmellick, Co. Laois. Ted was the sole provider for the family when he suffered a stroke aged only 44. Sadly, he lost his memory and use of his right-hand side. A potential disaster for a family in the 1940s turned into a story of survival. With gritty determination, Ted slowly regained his memory and re-learned his trade from scratch, returning to making small leather goods using only his mouth and his left hand. My grandfather’s fascinating story has inspired my wife Kasia and I to rejuvenate the family trade and tradition, and bring the MY NAME IS TED brand back to life. Ted’s legacy lives on.
