EDITO Né en 1954 à Bombay, Anish Kapoor est installé à Londres depuis le début des années 1970. Son travail a rapidement gagné une considération internationale célébrée par de nombreux prix dont le fameux Turner Prize, qu’il remporta en 1991. Sa démarche fit depuis l’objet de nombreuses expositions personnelles dans les musées les plus prestigieux du monde dont le Guggenheim, le Louvre, la Royal Academy, la Tate Modern, etc... Il lui a été récemment commandé de concevoir le signal marquant les prochains Jeux Olympiques à Londres, une sculpture de 116 mètres de haut intitulé “Orbit” . “Leviathan” , l’oeuvre de MONUMENTA 2011 est décrite ainsi par l’artiste : «Un seul objet, une seule forme, une seule couleur …Mon ambition est de créer un espace dans l’espace qui réponde à la hauteur et la lumière de la Nef du Grand Palais. Les visiteurs sont invités à entrer dans l’oeuvre, à s’immerger dans la couleur et ce sera, je l’espère, une expérience contemplative et poétique». Anish Kapoor est réprésenté par la Galerie Kamel Mennour, Paris. Born in Bombay in 1954, Anish Kapoor has been living in London since the 1970s. His work rapidly gained international recognition and has been awarded numerous prizes, including the famous Turner Prize, which he won in 1991. His career has been the subject of a number of solo exhibitions at the world’s most prestigious museums, including the Louvre, the Royal Academy, Tate Modern, etc. Recently, he has been commissioned to design the key landmark for the forthcoming Olympic Games in London: a 116-metre-high sculpture: “Orbit” . The artist describes “Leviathan” , the work of MONUMENTA 2011 as follows: “A single object, a single form, a single colour.” “My ambition”, he adds, “is to create a space within a space that responds to the height and luminosity of the Nave at the Grand Palais. Visitors will be invited to walk inside the art work, to immerse themselves in colour, and it will, I hope, be a contemplative and poetic experience.” Anish Kapoor is represented by Galerie Kamel Mennour, Paris. Clo’e Floirat who came up with the drawings for the dividers in this edition, was able to follow very closely this “monumental” installation and with one drawing a day shows us the birth of Leviathan which only took a few days to take shape in the nave of the Grand Palais.
