Egon Schiele’s reinterpretation of the self-portrait is the point from which this exhibition departs. Schiele, as the consummate artistic pioneer, cast off all artistic traditions in order to develop his own personal mode of theatrical self-staging accomplished via body language, gestures, and facial expressions. In its unsparing starkness, Schiele’s art marks a radical departure from the cult of beauty fostered by the Vienna Secession and the fin de siècle at large. The path thus forged was followed by generations of important artists whose works this presentation juxtaposes with Schiele’s own output.

this exhibition places works by nine artists (Georg Baselitz, Günter Brus, Jim Dine, VALIE EXPORT, Elke Silvia Krystufek, Maria Lassnig, Arnulf Rainer, Cindy Sherman, and Erwin Wurm) in dialogue with the incomparable self-portraits of Egon Schiele’s own creation.

This exhibition is on view from 10 September 2021 to 23 January 2022.
