CHRISTIAN DADA was founded in Tokyo in 2010 by Masanori Morikawa. The label’s name nods both to Parisian Haute Couture and Dadaism, the artistic movement, challenging perceived notions of beauty, logic, and social norms. The idea of the beauty of imperfection, which is at the core of Christian Dada design, is also the foundation of the wabi-sabi Japanese aesthetic philosophy.

Masanori Morikawa, who trained under Charles Anastase in London, has forged an unconventional approach to fashion. His complex, dark and energetic vision draws on a fascination for eastern subcultures and traditional Japanese crafts such as the “Yuzen” hand-dyeing technique used for silk kimonos. Traditional Japanese techniques are made modern through new applicationsof fabrics, delicate embroideries and intricate embellishments.

Christian Dada’s high involvement with the art world have also earned the brand’s international attention. After the AW16 official collaboration with the legendary Japanese artist Nobuyoshi Araki, followed by series of custom-outfits for a forerunning contemporary artist Takashi Murakami, the brand continues to showcase its direct influence of acclaimed artists such as French street artist Zevs, on the SS18 collection, and David Lynch for the most recent AW18 Collection. This influence also can be seen on the Paris runway, best exemplified through their dynamic runway installation, which featured 10 live drumming performances.

Initially presented in Tokyo, the label since 2014 has presented its men’s shows in Paris and opens up exciting new perspectives for the Christian Dada brand which is now sold at WILD STYLE in L.A., KOKKO in Canada, I.T. in Hong Kong, and at online retailer SSENSE. Christian Dada have also expanded into women’s wear starting with the Fall/Winter 2015, both collections are now presented together in Paris.
