100 Modem Women’s Milano Modem Women’s Paris Spring-Summer 2015 Editions dedicated to Niki de Saint Phalle Niki Charitable Art Foundation 2014 ART FOUNDATION Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002) was a French-American sculptor, painter, and filmmaker and one of the few women artists widely known for monumental sculpture. She has a place among of the most renowned artists from the mid-20th century. Throughout her prolific career, Saint Phalle ’s pieces are highly expressive, visually bold, and often playful and cartoonish - a style that celebrate aesthetics instead of interrogating its structures and conventions. In the beginning of 1960’s, a very early heroine of the Feminism, Niki de Saint Phalle was associated with the artistic movement Nouveaux Réalistes . In 1961, Saint Phalle had an exhibition at Galerie J, titled “Fire at Will.” On show were several of her Tirs (Shooting Paintings), which attracted the attention of a number of notable artists, including Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg. In the early 1970’s, she married Jean Tinguely with whom, in the beginning of 1980’s, she created the Parisian fountain of Stravinsky at the Pompidou Center . Under the influence of Gaudi, Saint Phalle created a fantastic Garden of playing in the Tarot in the town of Caraviño, over which she worked for more than 20 years (opened in 1998). In 1998-2002, she created the garden “ Queen Califia’s Magical Circle ” in California (USA). Niki de Saint Phalle was one of the first women to receive international acclaim and recognition during her lifetime, as well as successfully create a public persona. With themes ranging from joyful to profound to intellectual, the paradoxical nature of her work has yet to be fully explored.
