101 2010 CONTEMPORARY ARTIST Modem Women’s Milano Modem Women’s Paris Spring-Summer 2011 Cover by OLAFUR ELIASSON Danish artist Olafur Eliasson, born in Copenhagen in 1967, spent his childhood in Denmark and summers in Iceland, native country of his parents. And it is in these Nordic landscapes, dominated by drastic constant changes of natural light, which has formed its artistic sensibility. After studying at the Royal Academy of Arts in Copenhagen, he created in Berlin in 1995 the Olafur Eliasson Studio , a laboratory on spatiality. Eliasson is an artist who expresses himself through photography and sculpture, but he is mostly well-known for his installations. In 2003 he represented Denmark at the 50th Venice Biennale and in the same year he realized the installation “The weather project in the Turbine Hall” at the Tate Modern in London. In 2007 he created “Take Your Time: Olafur Eliasson” an installation for the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, exhibited in 2008 at the MoMA and the PS1 in New York, and in other locations until 2010. In 2009, “Your chance encounter “ was exhibited at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art. The “Mikroskop ” (Modem cover) installation was the main idea behind the exhibition dedicated to Olafur Eliasson at the Martin-Gropius-Bauhaus in Berlin in 2010. In the interior courtyard of the Museum, Eliasson realized walls of aluminum mirrors, thus creating an infinite calendoscopic space that reflects the metal structure itself and the light coming from above. “Microscope ” materialized the relationship between the museum and the city, architecture, space and perception.
