110 1999 STAGE DIRECTOR Modem Men’s Fall-Winter 1999-2000 Cover by PHILIPPE DÉCOUFLÉ The choreographer, dancer, mime artist, and theatre director Philippe Decouflé is noticeable in his visual and playful dance which gives to his choreographies a human, fine, poetic side. Philippe Decouflé was born in 1961 in France. He learned his skills at a very young age, at the Annie Fratellini “Ecole du Cirque” and the Marceau Mime School. Soon after, he found his interest in contemporary dance as a main reason to move to the Centre National de la Danse Contemporaine in Angers, and study under choreographer Alwin Nicolais . His career as a solo dancer drove him to establish Découflé Company of Arts in Bagnolet in 1983, moved in Saint-Denis in Paris almost 10 years later. He worked for the Lyon Opera Ballet, …….. was also awarded the “Silver Lion ” prize at the 1989 Venice Film Festival for his advertisement for Polaroid. The event which gave him the admiration of a global television audience of over two billion people, was his choreography work for the opening and closing ceremo- nies of the 1992 Winter Olympics. He was in charge for the choreography of the 50th anniversary Cannes Film Festival in 1997, and a parade for the 2007 Rugby Union World Cup in Saint-Denis in Paris. Decouflé won a 1988 BRIT Award for his choreographies in the category “Best Music Video”. From 2010 to 2013, he was in residence at the National Theater of Brittany. Decouflé gained even more credits with his show Iris for Cirque du Soleil. He also directed the show Paramour, another Cirque du Soleil project, which was launched in 2016 in New York City.
