2002 ARTISTS / PHOTOGRAPHER Modem Women’s Milano Modem Women’s Paris Fall-Winter 2002-2003 Covers by PETER LINDBERGH Peter Lindbergh (1944, Lissa) is a German photographer and film director. He is recognised as one of the most influential contemporary photographers, known for his memorable, elegant, emotive and cinematic aesthetic, typically shot in black and white photographies. In the early 1960’s, Peter Lindbergh studied at Berlin Academy of Fine Arts, while worked as a window dresser for a local department store. Later on, he studied free painting at the College of Art in Krefeld. In 1969, before graduating, was invited present his work (influenced by Joseph Kosuth and the Conceptual move- ment) at the avant-garde Galerie Denise René - Hans Mayer . Lindbergh turned his interest to photography and opened his own studio in the early 1970’s. In the late years of the decade, already based in Paris, Lindbergh started working for Vogue, shooting for the Italian, English, French, German and Ame- rican editions. Later on, he shot for The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Allure, and Rolling Stone. In the end of 1980’s, he became editor-in-chief at American Vogue . Lindbergh gained international acclaim by starting the the era of supermodels by photographing Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Tatjana Patitz, Cindy Crawford, and Christy Turlington together for the cover of the British Vogue . He realized documentary Inner Voices ( 1999), which was awarded at the Toronto International Film Festival. He has numerous of exhibitions worldwide - Victoria and Albert Museum, London, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Ullens Center for Contemporary Art, Beijing, China, Meštrović Pavilion HDLU Museum, Zagreb , among others. In 2014, Peter Lindbergh was honored for his longtime contributions to AIDS awareness at the annual amfAR New York Gala at Cipriani Wall Street. 109
