118 2012 CONTEMPORARY ARTIST Modem Men’s Modem New-York/LA Fall-Winter 2012-2013 Covers by ROBERT LONGO Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1953, Robert Longo returned to the United Sta- tes in the 1970s after attending the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. He joined Buffalo State College and graduated from the Fine Arts degree. Polyvalent artist earns first successes in the early 1980’s with the series “ Men in the Cities” - big drawings on a white background that represent men and women in twisted positions. In 1995, his passion for cinema led him to make Johnny Mnemonic, a Cyberpunk film, which brings to the fore the actor Keanu Reeves. Since 1999, Longo has devoted himself to a new series of works. He draws atomic explosions, huge waves, white planets and sharks ... large works of art where extreme violence blends in a sensation of gentle lightness. With these works, the artist intends to materialize the feeling of “immensity of the intimate”. The works of Robert Longo are present in the collections of the most prestigious international museums, including: the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim Museum and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis; the Stedelijk Museum of Amsterdam; the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris; the Albertina of Vienna; the Ludwig Museum in Cologne ... Robert Longo received the coveted Goslar Kaiserring Award in 2005.
