136 2003 DESIGNER Modem Men’s Modem New York/LA Fall-Winter 2003-2004 Covers by TOM DIXON Tom Dixon OBE (1959 in Sfax, Tunisia) is a self-taught British industrial designer. He is currently the Creative Director of the brand ‘Tom Dixon’ specialising in Lighting, Furniture and Accessories. In the mid 1980’s Tom Dixon became visible to the audience as “the talented untrained designer with a line in welded salvage furniture”, because he teaches himself first to weld, then to produce furniture. Soon after, he was working for the Italian giant Cappellini for whom he designed the Iconic ‘S’ chair. In the 1990’s, Dixon designed Jack - polypropylene “sitting, stacking, lighting thing” for his own company Eurolounge, which was an icon of the decade. In 1998, Tom continued his career as a Head of Design at Habitat , where he grew to the position of Creative Director until 2008. In 2002, Dixon established his own studio, in London, called “ Tom Dixon ”. Two years later, Proventus (Swedish-based private investment company) teamed up with Dixon to establish a design and product development holding company - Design Research. In 2012, the Company started its first accessories range at Maison et Objet, Paris. The company’s products are sold internationally in 65 countries. Tom Dixon’ s works took a place in museums and institutions across the globe, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, Museum of Modern Art New York and Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris.
