38 The artist Francesco Clemente, born in Naples in 1952, is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters . For four decades and with the same poetic approach, the artistic activity of Francesco Clemente explores the ambivalences, the opportunities, the joys and sorrows, the desires of the human being. In the 1970s, the works he produced testified to his interest in the contempla- tive traditions of India, a country where he lived for several years. In 1981, he settled in New York with his wife Alba and his four sons. In the 1980s he exhibited in prestigious museums, including the Whitechapel (London), the Art Institute (Chicago), the Nationalgalerie (Berlin), the Metropolitan Museum and the Dia Center (New York). In the 1990s, at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Royal Academy (London), the Center Pompidou (Paris) and the Sezon Museum (Tokyo). In 1999 and 2000, the Guggenheim Museums of New York and Bilbao organized the most important retrospective dedicated to its work. In 2004, he exhibited at the Roses Art Museum of Massachusetts and at the Irish Museum in Dublin. In 2006, at the Maxxi in Rome and in 2009, at the Mother Museum in Naples. During his career, he has collaborated with other artists. He painted with Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol, illustrated the poems of Robert Creeley, Allen Ginsberg, John Wieners and Rene Ricard . In 2011, he exhibited at t he Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt , and in September he pre- sented the 78 Tarot interpretations in the Galleries of the Uffizi of Florence, whose major arcana are reproduced on the dividers of Modem Milan and Modem Paris. These cards, constitute a journey through the places to which it is deeply con- nected. In his arcana, are represented, along with him and his family, characters from the world of art, literature, theater, cinema, fashion, which have been part of its history: Allen Ginsberg, Salman Rushdie, Philipp Glass, Scarlett Johansson, Jasper Johns, Diane von Fürstenberg, Max Seidel, Marisa Monte .
