CONTEMPORARY ARTIST 44 Modem Men’s Modem New York/LA Fall-Winter 2014-2015 Covers by GÉRARD GAROUSTE 2014 Gérard Garouste (1949, Paris) is a painter, illustrator, decorator and sculptor. Being known as one of the most important French artists, his figurative, mytho- logical and allegorical paintings are often recognized as “postmodern”. A passionate reader of the Bible, tales and legends, Gérard Garouste questions the notion of the subject in paintings by exploring the mysteries of the origin and transmission. In 1991, he founded “La Source” , an association for educational and social action, which helps underprivileged children and young people who are even excluded from society to thrive by participating in workshops led by professional artists. He exhibited at the Venice Biennale (1984), in New York (Leo Castelli Gallery, 1985), Los Angeles (Santa Monica Museum of Art, 1990) and Tokyo (National Museum of Art, 1990). His work is represented amongst others in public collections of the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris, the Ludwig Museum in Vienna or the Museum of contemporary Art in Montreal…
