51 Modem Men’s & Modem NY Fall-Winter 2001-2002 Covers by INGO MAURER 2001 Ingo Maurer (born 1932, Germany) is a German industrial designer who spe- cialises in the design of lamps and light installations, often called one of design geniuses of our time. In the mid-to-end 1950’s Maurer trained as a graphic designer. In 1960 he moved to USA, where he started a career as a freelance designer in IBM and Kayser Aluminium. Three years later, back in Germany, he found his own company “Ingo Maurer GmbH”. Not long after, one of his first designs, «Bulb» has been included in the design collection of the Museum of Modern Art in 1969. Maurer presented low-voltage wire system YaYaHo in 1984. Because of its instant success, he was invited to create special YaYaHo installations for the exhibition “Lumieres je pense a vous” at Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Villa Medici in Rome, and the Institut Français d’Architecture in Paris. In 1989 Maurer for the first time created lighting objects and installation which were not meant for serial production, which sustain the exhibition “ Ingo Maurer: Lumière Hasard Réflexion ” (Ingo Maurer: Light Chance Reflection) for Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain (Cartier Foundation for Con- temporary Art). Since than, his design and objects became part of numerous exhibitions worldwide and been honored with countless awards. One of his latest project is the redesign for the underground area of the U-Bahn Marienplatz in Munich, Germany, for which Maurer was awarded, together with Allmann Sattler Wappner. DESIGNER
