59 Modem Men’s Modem NY /LA Spring-Summer 2001 Cover by JEAN-BAPTISTE MONDINO 2000 ARTIST / PHOTOGRAPHER Jean-Baptiste Mondino (born in 1949, France) is a significant French fashion photographer and music video director, and producer. In the last twenty years, Mondino ’s creations are highlighted by the filmic framing and camera axes, by the specific language and sequential durations. The relatively slow rhythm of the shots, the constructed and graphically stylised images stand out, radically changed the strategies of the rock, pop and fashion industry. Mondino started his career in the beginning of 1970’s as an art director for “ Publicis ”. In the 1980’s his wild excitement for photography, fashion and music leads him to direct music videos and the success didn’t late. In 1985, Mondino wins 4 MTV Video Music Awards for his work for the Don Henley’s video “ The Boys of Summer” . This favourable outcome takes him to the collaboration with Pascal Lebègue with whom he makes few outstanding black-and-white videos for Sting’s “Russians’ and Madonna ’s “Justify My Love”. In addition to Mondino ’s fashion photo sessions, he often shoots celebrities, including Madonna, Lenny Kravitz, Brian Molko, Monica Bellucci, Penélope Cruz, Vanessa Paradis, Karl Lagerfeld and etc. Jean-Baptiste Mondino actively cooperates with the French magazine “Vogue ”.
