The Triennale di Milano, which has recently renewed its board of directors, will also appoint, for the first time, a creative director, the architect and designer Michele De Lucchi, who will be the director of the Italian Design Museum.
The announcement was made during the presentation of the strategic lines for the next four years and the appointment of the new advisory committee of Triennale Milano.
"Design is not a static act, but is increasingly today the process of devising a positive shared scenario that will, in particular, guide us through the big contradictions: between past and future, between the concrete and the virtual, between human and digital, and between disciplines and divergent visions," said De Lucchi. I have in mind a route that leads us to construct and to embody the concept of ‘sustainability of the collective imagination."
The institution's strategic lines
The new advisory committee was also presented at the press conference, composed of: Michele De Lucchi, curator of design and Director of the Museo del Design Italiano, Manuela Lucà-Dazio, curator of architecture, and Andrea Viliani, curator of contemporary art. The committee also includes some scientific consultants for specific discipline areas. Paolo Mereghetti has been brought in to reinforce the presence of the cinema in Triennale; Carlo Antonelli has been reconfirmed for music, and Luca Stoppini for fashion. Chiara Spangaro will be responsible for the scientific coordination of the Triennale Archives. Umberto Angelini is the artistic director for the Triennale theater. Damiano Gullì will be curator of the public program and publishing activities, and Marco Sammicheli will be Design Week Exhibition Program Lead. Luca Cipelletti is the architectural director of Palazzo dell’Arte. The curators and consultants chosen to develop Triennale's cultural programming are all Italians with strongly international profiles.
The plan for the four-year period 2026-2030
Triennale's cultural programming will be guided by a key topic for the contemporary world in the form of a question, which will be different every year, and the exhibitions, public program, publications and research initiatives will be designed as forms of possible answers.
The exhibition program will include themed exhibitions and monographic exhibitions on leading figures in the world of art, architecture, design and fashion, and it will always be possible to trace these back to the content and perspectives of the framework identified.
Reviving the tradition of the historic Triennale exhibitions, public art events will be organized in the space in front of the Triennale building, which will be entrusted to international designers, architects and artists. Triennale's permanent design collection, on display in the Museo del Design Italiano, will be expanded through a policy of acquisitions in order to extend up to and to cover the most recent periods. Through the plans to be developed by Michele De Lucchi, as well as presenting objects and products, the Museum will also focus on collecting the stories of ideas that have made Italian design great, or on identifying the original elements that have generated the greatest successes, investigating the social and cultural contexts and the design methodologies.
Great prominence will be given to the activities of the Triennale Centro Studi, a body founded in 1935, and active until 1990, then reactivated in 2024 as part of Cuore. Presided over by Presidente Trione, the Centro Studi will have the task of identifying the theme of the International Exhibition, the next edition of which will be in 2028, and the annual interdisciplinary themes, as well as defining the research activities and scientific publications. It will also coordinate a hub, to be housed periodically in the Triennale spaces, consisting of a program for incubating ideas and plans focused on emerging figures in the world of design, architecture and creativity. The work on the archives will be intensified through research and popularization initiatives as well as collaborations with other institutions.
Cuore will continue to bring together higher education activities, set up in collaboration with national and international universities and research centers. The Triennale PhD Program will be launched, offering new doctoral research degrees on key issues for the institution, and Research Fellowship programs for academics, curators, architects, artists and designers will be advertised using international application procedures.
