Exhibition

An exhibition of over 100 pieces from Daphne Guinness' private collection of couture will affirm her fashion icon status.

It was recently announced that from the 16th September 2011 until the 7th January 2012, The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York will host an exhibition dedicated to the eternal aptitude for fashion of Daphne Guinness. While there have been many exhibitions devoted to great fashion designers, only a few have focused on individual women of style. “Daphne Guinness” will feature approximately 100 pieces from the icon’s collection of couture garments, designed among others by Azzedine Alaïa, Karl Lagerfeld for Chanel, John Galliano for Christian Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Rick Owens, Gareth Pugh, Tom Ford, Valentino and the late Alexander McQueen, as well as Guiness’ own designs alongside images and videos of and by her.

In collaboration with Valerie Steele, director of The Museum at FIT, Daphne Guinness has curated an exhibition, which showcases pieces that she has acquired over the years, in the same way an art collector might present his or her favourite works in a gallery. The vast collection demonstrates Guinness’ appreciation for high fashion, while the commissioning of such an exhibition itself represents her influence on the industry.

Proclaiming that she is “not a muse”, Guinness describes herself as more similar to a “bee, flitting from one designer to another”. The variety of designers whose work is included in the exhibition reiterates precisely this.

As her friend, art historian, John Richardson, puts it: “She’s the object of her own creativity. Her persona is her own masterpiece.”
