Christo recently unveiled design ideas for his new work that will be released by June 2016. Entitled The Floating Piers, the colossal installation envisioned by the Bulgarian-born Italian artist will be set up on the Iseo lake, located 100 kilometers east of Milan and 200 kilometers west of Venice.

The project, a nearly three-mile long floating dock made of shimmering yellow fabric and carried by a modular system of 200,000 high-density polyethylene cubes, will be completed by June 2016, and will be on display for 16 days. After the exhibition, the installation will be dismantled and recycled. Visitors will be able to walk on the artwork, from Monte Isola to San Paolo, and to the mainland town of Sulzano. As with all of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s projects, The Floating Piers will be funded entirely through the sale of Christo’s original works.

Christo and his late wife, the Moroccan-born artist Jeanne-Claude, have already created several projects in Italy, such as the Wrapped Fountain and the Wrapped Medieval Tower in Spoleto (1968), the Wrapped Monuments in Milano (1970), and the Wrapped Roman Wall in 1974. The Floating Piers will be Christo’s first large scale project since 2005.
