Bernsteinzimmer (2010) by the Romanian-born Hungarian artist István Csákány is a detailed and complex reconstruction, completely in wood, of a private atelier. The effect of artistic alienation brought about by the completely wooden construction gives the untidy cellar room, which seems to have been just recently abandoned, something of the effect of a metaphorical mise en abyme, a figurative repetition: an interior reflecting the everyday, ordered chaos of a man who takes refuge in his tinkering and who has portrayed his own prosaic reality at life size.

Throughout her prolific career, Saint Phalle created a complex body of work in various media which was deeply embedded with socio-political issues. With themes ranging from joyful to profound to intellectual, the paradoxal nature of her work has yet to be fully explored. She was one of the first women to receive international acclaim and recognition during her lifetime, as well as successfully create a public persona. Similar to Warhol, Saint Phalle was able to use the media to skillfully guide the reception of her work.

The exhibition Solides Fragiles brings together different generations of artists for whom the intrinsic quality of an artwork lies in its aptitude to resonate with the exhibition space. Environment, atmosphere and light are not merely external factors but are essential elements of the work. As ambient and active substances, they reveal the artwork. Reciprocally, the artwork in turn unveils the space, making us aware of unexpected aspects.

Rhythm 0, 1974 is one of Marina Abramovic’s earliest and most challenging works, in which she examines the relationship between performer and audience. Abramovic, in a passive role, let viewers act on her body in any way they chose, using 72 objects placed on a table, including a feather, scalpel, whip and pistol: some give pleasure, others might inflict pain. Initially gentle, the audience gradually became aggressive. The installation reconstructs the table and parts of the original performance.

This is the case for the important exhibition the Castello dedicates to the famous French artist Sophie Calle, an unchallenged protagonist on the world art scene, who will present a totally site-specific project for the monumental halls on the second floor of the Sabauda Residence.

The exhibition forces us to re-examine our own ideas and perceptions of pleasure, and shows how forms can be transmuted from the private to the public sphere.
