THE ART OF JERZY KEDZIORA

Throughout history humans looked to the heavens in search for the sublime. Chewing Gum Monuments

For the first time there is to be a solo exhibition of work by Ron Nagle (San Francisco, 1939) in the Netherlands. Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is featuring his recent works in ‘Chewing Gum Monuments’ (gallery 52). Nagle’s oeuvre is made up of ceramic shapes and sculptures no more than ten to fifteen centimetres tall—striking, unorthodox compositions of strange shapes, textures and intense colours.

Jonathan Monk (1969, Leicester, UK) parked his Vespa PK scooter in the museum, with its lights flashing. The headlights, tail lights, brake lights, turn signals and speedometer lights flashed on and off in a seemingly random order. The sequence was in fact a carefully arranged permutation, with 479,001,600 possible combinations, enough to last over fifteen years.

Colour is optics

The Russian artist Mikhail Karasik (born 1953) specialises in graphics, in particular, art books of lithographs. A series of graphic works was used as the starting point for this library exhibition, which he made in response to a manual on colour theory by Mikhail Matyushin, Spravotsjnik po tsvetoe (Reference on Color), which was published in 1932. These lithographs were supplemented with other manuals about colour by Josef Albers, Paul Schuitema and Jasper Johns, amongst others. In this way the exhibition provides a summary of the theme of colour in the twentieth-century history of art.
