Do you actively shape the image others have of you? What are we trying to achieve by changing our appearance with the help of make-up and other means?
The skin in its function as carrier of various forms of body decoration is subject to a wide range of trends: people use skin as a surface to apply make-up, incise, paint, brand, pierce, add on or remove. This is always done with the intention of communicating a message and an image to the world.
The exhibition “Make-up” takes a closer look at the subject of body styling in its social context and the practices people follow. The focus is on make-up, body painting, tattooing, piercing, scarification and body modifications that even go deeper under the skin.
