"Artist/Rebel/Dandy: Men of Fashion" celebrates the dandy, tracing the variety of ways in which this personality has blazed through two centuries, several continents, and diverse artistic genres — and investigating where he resides today.
From the discreet sophistication and consummate elegance of Beau Brummell (1778–1840) to the romantics and revolutionaries of today (Rick Owens and Patti Smith, for example), this groundbreaking exhibition departs from the prevailing image of the dandy as superficial and self-indulgent to reveal instead an artistic, rebellious figure, profound in thought and imagination in his sartorial and personal presentation.
Artist/Rebel/Dandy tells the story of the dandy’s creation of a unique path towards self-discovery and self-expression. The RISD Museum brings together a rich and compelling array of garments and artistic materials from its own collections coupled with loans from other national and international institutions and private individuals.
The exhibition is co-curated by Kate Irvin and Laurie Brewer, who also contributed to the lavishly illustrated book that accompanies the exhibition.
