Asia Society presents Light Before Dawn: Unofficial Chinese Art 1974-1985, an exhibition presenting 3 groups of Chinese artists: Wuming, Xingxing and Caocao, and reconsiders the artistic and conceptual contributions made by two generations of unofficial artists who were active between 1974 and 1985.
Despite their near absence from the official narrative of contemporary art history, they broke conceptual, stylistic, and thematic ground for systematic changes in the Chinese art world of the 1980s. At least indirectly, these changes have led to their emergence as a global force in the late twentieth century.
