108 1999 FILM DIRECTOR Modem Men’s Spring-Summer 2000 Cover by PETER GREENAWAY Peter Greenaway (1942, Wales) is a British film director, screenwriter, and artist, known by his profound sense of composition, distinct influence of Renaissance and Baroque painting, Flemish painting in particular, strong contrasts between costume and nudity, nature and architecture, furniture and people, wild sexual pleasure and painful death. At an early age Greenaway decided to become a painter. He was fascinated by European cinema, especially by the films of Ingmar Bergman , the French nouvelle vague filmmakers (Jean-Luc Godard and Alain Resnais in particular). In 1962, Greenaway studied at Walthamstow College of Art. In 1965, he started to work as a film editor and director at the Central Office of Information. He created numerous of short and feature-length film ( The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover, The Pillow Book, 8 Women and etc.), documentaries and television productions. In the 1990’s, Greenaway wrote few opera libretti as well. In the new century Peter Greenaway arrived with a multimedia project of three films, a website, two books, a touring exhibition. In 2007 and 2008 he released two movies on Rembrandt. He is a professor of cinema studies at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland. In 2016, Greenaway received a Honoris Causa doctorate from the University of San Martín, Argentina.
