83 2017 CONTEMPORARY ARTIST FILM-MAKER Modem Europe Fall-Winter 2017-2018 Cover by MARCUS KREISS Marcus Kreiss is a German painter, film-maker and the founder of the independent TV station SOUVENIRS FROM EARTH (SFE), a TV channel dedicated completely to art. The artistic approach in his films is recognizable by its extreme slow motion and natural color fields. Kreiss often works with professional actors or cele- brities. As an artist, he explores the physical possibilities of the bi-dimensional space of the flat screen with hypnotic images and iconic quality. Kreiss studied filmmaking in Rome (Cinecitta) and Fine Arts in Aix-en-Provence (France). In 1998, Marcus Kreiss presented the unique concept of the TV channel SOUVENIRS FROM EARTH at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, and an year later at the Venice Biennale. The station is a gateway to a parallel universe made by 2000 artists and millions of viewers in France and Austria. The channel presents a mixture between video art, performance, photography, contemporary dance, live news and interviews from the hot spots of the art world. In 2009, the channel was given the opportunity to have its permanent installation at Palais de Tokyo. In 2011, the French Institute invited SFE to present their production at the Nam June Paik Center in Seoul, South Korea. Marcus’ work is represented in major art collections, including those of Deutsche Bank, Fnac (France’s government collection), and the Yvon Lambert Collection in Avignon
