Pierre Mendell – one of the world’s leading graphic designers – died on 19 December 2008 in Munich aged 79.

For almost 30 years he played a decisive role in moulding the visual identity of the Neue Sammlung – The International Design Museum Munich.
Over a period of more than 40 years Mendell’s posters have been a prominent feature on advertising columns and billboards in Munich. Pierre Mendell’s œuvre, for which the graphic designer (b. 1929 in Essen) received many international awards, was largely composed around two internationally operating cultural institutions: The Neue Sammlung, for which he created both posters as well as the museum’s visual identity from 1980 until 2003, and the Bavarian State Opera, for which he worked in a similar capacity from 1993–2006.
Shortly before his death Pierre Mendell designed a poster for an event to be held in the Neue Sammlung next month.
