Film London and Channel 4 in association with the Whitechapel Gallery has announced the ten artists shortlisted for the 2013 Jarman Award: Ed Atkins, Beatrice Gibson, Emma Hart, Rachel Maclean, Uriel Orlow, Charlotte Prodger, Hannah Sawtell, Grace Schwindt, John Smith, and Jessica Warboys.

The winner will be announced at a special event on 6 November at the Whitechapel Gallery and will receive combined prize money of £10,000 as well as a film commission for Channel 4's short-form arts strand, Random Acts. Three further artists will also be selected for Random Acts commissions, worth £16,000 in total.

The prize is named after legendary British filmmaker and artist Derek Jarman, who died of AIDS in 1994.

Celebrating the spirit of experimentation, imagination and inspiration in the work of UK artist film-makers, The Jarman Award recognises individual artist film-makers whose risk-taking work resists boundaries and conventional definition - work that encompasses innovation, excellence and vision.

The Jarman Award is only part of Film London’s work to support the sector. Through the Film London Artists’ Moving Image Network (FLAMIN), it provides vital funding to ensure London’s artists can continue to create exciting, challenging and through-provoking work.
