The Alhòndiga in Bilbao, an old cellar dating from the early twntieth century, was transformed into a cultural and leisure center by Philippe Starck.

With an area of 40,000 m2, the Alhòndinga is divided into four zones and has a steel structure weighing over 4000 tons. The site will house a new cultural and leisure center.

"It’s a highly theatrical site, while very simple, made with bricks and raw metal beams. I think it’s important to return to a pure functional architecture that provide spaces for people", says Philippe Starck. For the frenche design, this is an achievement of which will be "the proudest of his life".

The Alhòndinga will open to the public on May 20th with two exhibitions : Proyecto Tierra and Tierra Natal and Otro lugar comienza aquí.
