Luxury marketplace Vestiaire Collective is banning 30 brands of fast fashion to further its efforts to tackle waste in the industry. The operation is part of a plan launched last year, aimed at fighting fashion waste over the next 3 years.

The retailer announced that it would be introducing a series of criteria determining what is fast fashion, and in turn, what drives overproduction and overconsumption, which would be developed with a committee of fashion industry experts. Vestiaire Collective's nine industry and sustainability committees were selected based on their expertise and strong understanding of fast fashion's negative environmental and social impact. The industry figures include Eva Kruse, chief global engagement officer at Pangaia, Orsola de Castro, author and co-founder of Fashion Revolution, Matteo Ward, co-founder of Wrad living, activist, consultant for Un/Cefact, and Liz Ricketts, co-founder and director of The Or Foundation, among others. The selection criteria consist of five requirements: a low price point and the repairability of the garment, frequent collection updates, a broad product range, intensive and frequent promotional periods, and a swift production cycle.

"The decision to ban fast fashion was made to support Vestiaire Collective’s long-time work to promote alternatives to the dominant model of fashion," said Dounia Wone, chief impact officer of Vestiaire Collective. "Fast fashion brands contribute to excessive production and consumption, resulting in devastating social and environmental consequences in the Global South. It is our duty to act and lead the way for other industry players to join us in this movement, and together we can have an impact."

With this announcement, Vestiaire Collective confirms and strengthens its commitment to keep fast fashion off its platform and to encourage consumers to do their shopping responsibly and choose wisely.
