Kunsthal Rotterdam presents the exhibition ‘Masterly!’. From 7 December 2019 to 29 March 2020, as part of ‘Boijmans Next Door’, an overview of more than four centuries of paintings and drawings by famous masters such as Rembrandt, Rubens, Van Gogh, Delacroix, Pissarro, Saenredam, Goltzius and Basquiat will be exhibited alongside some lesser-known artists, such as Cornelis Saftleven and Joseph Augustus Knip.

The collection of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen counts more than 130 works remarking the relationship between draughtsmanship and painting. The two practices are extremely related but in the past drawing was considered a purely preparatory medium than with time became an independent practice. However, the great masters’ loved drawing and Masterly! shows the extraordinary skill of artists who excelled in both art forms and allows visitors to compare the drawn and painted works of each artist.

Drawings are rarely exhibited because of their sensitivity to light, thus, Masterly! is an unmissable occasion to see a selection of the most beautiful drawings in the world for a few months before they will be stored away again for years.

The exhibition is curated by Friso Lammertse and is part of ‘Boijmans Next Door’, a citywide project to keep Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen’s collection visible while the museum is closed for renovation. ‘Boijmans Next Door’ has been made possible by the Droom en Daad Foundation.
