To coincide with International Women’s Day, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs is opening the Travaux de dames ? exhibition, exploring the evolving role of women in applied arts such as textiles, fashion, ceramics and design but also in photography and drawing. This evolution mirrors the history of our museum and our institution’s pioneering role regarding women in the arts. Travaux de dames ? shows the scope of female activity in a variety of fields and how the status of women has progressed from creators mastering techniques to which they have often been confined, to that of female artists working freely in all mediums. Chronologically and thematically presented, it features more than two hundred creations dating from the late 19th century to today. Selected exclusively from the museum’s extensive collections, they illustrate the wide range of fields in which women have excelled, featuring the work of emblematic figures such as Hélène Henry, Sonia Delaunay, Elsa Schiaparelli, Eileen Gray, Charlotte Perriand, Niki de Saint-Phalle, Maïmé Arnodin and Denise Fayolle, and Matali Crasset.
