Special event

Amnesty International has invited the designer to conceive a piece in honour of the activist Liu Xiaobo.

Liu Xiaobo the Chinese writer professor and human rights activist is imprisoned since 2009. In 2010 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Pize for his long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China. Being impeached to receive the price in person, his chair remained empty and became a symbol of repression.

As a tribute, and inspired by the symbol, Maarten Baas has designed The Empty Chair. The 5 meter high sculptural piece of furniture is a crossing between a chair and a ladder. Monumental and symbolic, The Empty Chair will be presented at the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Amnesty International on May 28, 2011 in Pakhuis De Zwijger in Amsterdam.
